Outdoors the cavernous cover of Hangar #30 at Naval Air Station Norfolk, the enormous concrete apron was already crowded with planes and sailors late on the morning of Sept. 17, 1943, when a sluggish-shifting cargo of depth bombs from Yorktown got here down the street from the naval base.
